A researcher at the Brandenburg University of Technology, Germany, Mr Isa Elegbede, has explained some of the COVID-19 opportunities for environmental experts.
The environmental and sustainability expert said this at an online technical session of the Nigeria Institution of Environmental Engineers, Lagos Chapter.
He called for awareness of resource management to reduce carbon in the environment.
He urged environmental experts in Nigeria to develop a circular model for the country.
“circular economy is a system that regenerates material and product without wastage,” Isa said.
He also encouraged the engineers to make use of online resources to develop their technical skills during the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The chairman of the institute, Engr. (Mrs) Abiola Kosegbe, said, “The social-economic impact of COVID-19 will be with us for a long time. Every sector must redirect their energy and prepare towards the opportunities post-COVID-19.”
In a statement issued after the technical session, the engineers called on the government to give attention to the environment.
“The absence of importation has brought about a dearth of foreign materials in developing sewage plant among others.
“The engineers agreed that this is the time to develop and promote local sewage treatment plant and other environmental material for use in the country,” it added.
